my new favorite camus! and that’s saying a lot because i already loved the stranger and the myth of sisyphus. this one dives deep into absurdism and how it’s philosophies can be applied to rebellion. this was written around the time of the french revolution so revolts and rebellions (different but similar) were heavy on camus’ mind. i’ve definitely been integrating a lot of this thinking since putting it down. 8/10

i really don’t get the hype around this book. sorry. i don’t understand why it’s called a mystery when the killer is obvious the whole time. it’s not just foreshadowing she’s just straight up telling you who it is and how they did it. i kept waiting for a twist that never happens. i wrote like 10 better endings in my head while reading it. also there’s some problematic age gap stuff that was super uncomfortable to read but you’re suppose to be cheering for the older man??? it’s hard to explain on here because onlyfans blocks a lot of words but if you’re really curious about my opinion this book was included in my “rating the books i read in 2022” youtube video on my channel loserlex ❣️

this is in my top three of vonnegut for sure. it’s definitely the one i reference the most. it sucks that it is so topical but it is extremity relevant. the main character is on trial for making pro-nazi propaganda in WWII. his defense is that he was ordered by the american goverment to do so while they hid secret messages in his propaganda to communicate with each other in code. The moral of the story is that we are who we pretend to be so be careful who you pretend to be. even though the mc didn’t truly believe the anti-semiticism he was spreading he was still fueling people who did believe terrible things. 10/10

tbh i had no idea “down and out” meant being broke until i read this hahaha. so i thought this was just gonna be about some guy chillin wandering the city streets of paris but noooo. i’m so glad it is what it is though. orwell is always so topical (sadly) and this book is no exception. it’s crazy to me that a book about taking place in paris in during the great depression is still such an accurate depiction of poverty today in america. 8.5/10
